What is a Tooth-Colored Filling?
A tooth-colored filling is a composite resin used to fill a cavity in a tooth. They are used as a dental restorative material to return the function and integrity of a tooth after it has lost structure due to cavities or other degradation.
What are the benefits of a Tooth-Colored Filling?
Composite fillings provide good durability, resistance to fracture, and are able to withstand moderate pressure from the constant stress of chewing. Compared to gold inlays and onlays, tooth-colored fillings are not as durable but generally cost less. They are a great choice for patients who prefer their fillings look more natural. Because of better cosmetics, tooth-colored fillings are generally used more often than amalgam fillings or gold inlays and onlays.
How long does a Tooth-Colored Filling take?
It depends on how many fillings are being done, but tooth-colored fillings generally take about 30 minutes and can be done in one visit. Several fillings can be done in a little over one hour. Tooth-colored fillings usually take longer to place than metal fillings, because they require the tooth be kept clean and dry while the cavity is filled.
